RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the application of refined nursing intervention in patients undergoing unruptured intracranial aneurysm intervention, evaluating its impact on neurological function recovery and prognosis improvement. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with intracranial aneurysms and undergoing treatment at our hospital from February 2022 to June 2023 were included in this study. After applying complete inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure sample representativeness, a total of 92 patients were enrolled. Using a randomization method, patients were divided into an observation group and a control group. The control group received routine nursing care, while the observation group received refined nursing intervention. Nursing effects were compared between the two groups, and statistical analysis was conducted using appropriate methods, with content analysis summarizing the results. RESULTS: The observation group, post-intervention, exhibited significantly improved Neurological Function Deficit (NFD) scores compared to the control group (p = 0.023). Additionally, the observation group showed higher proportions of Grade V patients in the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) post-intervention (p = 0.031). Moreover, Fugl Meyer Assessment (FMA) scores for motor function were notably higher in the observation group than the control group (p = 0.003). The observation group also reported lower headache intensity and fewer adverse outcomes than the control group (p = 0.018, 0.038). CONCLUSION: Refined nursing intervention in patients undergoing intracranial aneurysm intervention demonstrates better outcomes in terms of neurological function recovery and prognosis improvement. It reduces uncertainty in nursing practices, effectively enhancing nursing outcomes, and warrants clinical application and promotion.

RESUMO

To evaluate the efficacy and nutrition of single-anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) in Chinese obese patients in the first postoperative year. Clinical data of 66 obese patients who underwent SADI-S surgery at China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University from November 2018 to May 2022 were retrospectively collected. The weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL), and percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) were recorded at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Moreover, metabolic disease remission and nutrient deficiencies were assessed at 1 year postoperatively. Overall, 66 patients (38 males and 28 females) were recruited, with a mean age of 35 (18-61) years and an average preoperative BMI of 42.94 kg/m2. Before surgery, 38 patients had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 46 patients had hyperuricemia (HUA), 45 patients had hypertension (HTN), 35 patients had hyperlipidemia, 12 patients had hypercholesterolemia, 12 patients had hyper-low-density lipoproteinemia, and 14 patients had gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms (GERD). All patients had undergone a DaVinci robotic or laparoscopic SADI-S surgery, and none converted to laparotomy or died. Four patients developed postoperative complications and were cured and discharged after conservative treatment or surgical treatment. At 3, 6 and 12 months, the average %EWL was 62.07 ± 26.56, 85.93 ± 27.92, and 106.65 ± 29.65%, %TWL was 22.67 ± 4.94, 32.10 ± 5.18, and 40.56 ± 7.89%, respectively. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), uric acid (UA), triglycerides (TG), blood pressure (BP), and other indexes were significantly lower after one year post-surgery compared with the preoperative period (P < 0.05). The remission rates of T2DM, HUA, HTN, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyper-low-density lipoproteinemia 1 year after surgery were 100, 65.2, 62.2, 94.3, 100, and100%, respectively. One year after surgery, the remission rate of GERD was 71.4% (10/14), the rate of new occurrence of GERD was 12.1% (8/66), and the overall incidence rate was 18.2% (12/66). Except for vitamin B12(vit B12), the other nutrient indexes were significantly decreased after 1 year of surgery relative to levels before surgery (P < 0.05). The deficiency rates for vitamin A (vit A), vitamin E (vit E), zinc ion (Zn), and folic acid (FA) were higher (45.5, 25.8, 24.2, and 16.7%, respectively); however, there were no related clinical symptoms. SADI-S had significant effects on weight loss and metabolic disease remission. The main nutrient deficiencies after SADI-S were vit A, vit E, Zn, and FA deficiencies. The long-term efficacy and safety of SADI-S warrant further follow-up.

RESUMO

The genus Helleborus belongs to the Ranunculaceae family, distributed in southeastern Europe and western Asia. In folk medicine, it is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic medicine for rheumatoid arthritis and bruises. Through reviewing recent articles, it was found that two hundred and twenty-six compounds have been isolated and identified from the genus Helleborus. These compounds include steroids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, lignans, anthraquinones, phenolics and others. Among them, the main chemical constituents are steroids. Pharmacological studies show Helleborus has anti-cancer, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-hyperglycaemic, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. This article reviews the botany, phytochemistry, pharmacological effects and clinical applications of the genus Helleborus. Hopefully, it will provide a reference for in-depth research and exploitation of the genus Helleborus.

RESUMO

WNK (With No Lysine) kinases are members of serine/threonine protein kinase family, which lack conserved a catalytic lysine (K) residue in protein kinase subdomain II and this residue is replaced by either asparagine, serine, or glycine residues. They are involved in various physiological regulations of flowering time, circadian rhythms, and abiotic stresses in plants. In this study, we identified the WNK gene family in two species of Acorus, and analyzed their phylogenetic relationship, physiochemical properties, subcellular localization, collinearity, and cis-elements. The results showed twenty-two WNKs in two Acorus (seven in Ac. gramineus and fifteen in Ac. calamus) have been identified and clustered into five main clades phylogenetically. Gene structure analysis showed all WNKs possessed essential STKc_WNK or PKc_like superfamily domains, and the gene structures and conserved motifs of the same clade were similar. All the WNKs harbored a large number of light response elements, plant hormone signaling elements, and stress resistance elements. Through a collinearity analysis, two and fourteen segmental duplicated gene pairs were identified in the Ac. gramineus and Ac. calamus, respectively. Moreover, we observed tissue-specificity of WNKs in Acorus using transcriptomic data, and their expressions in response to salt stress and cold stress were analyzed by qRT-PCR. The results showed WNKs are involved in the regulation of abiotic stresses. There were significant differences in the expression levels of most of the WNKs in the leaves and roots of Acorus under salt stress and cold stress, among which two members in Ac. gramineus (AgWNK3 and AgWNK4) and two members in Ac. calamus (AcWNK8 and AcWNK12) were most sensitive to stress. In summary, this paper will significantly contribute to the understanding of WNKs in monocots and thus provide a set up for functional genomics studies of WNK protein kinases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Uninterrupted use of oral anticoagulants before atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation can reduce the incidence of perioperative thromboembolic events. However, the effect of new oral anticoagulants on activated clotting time (ACT) in response to heparin during AF ablation in Chinese populations remains unknown. The aim of the present retrospective study was to investigate the value of ACTs in response to intraoperative heparin administration in patients using dabigatran or rivaroxaban. METHODS: From January 2018 to December 2021, a total of 173 patients undergoing AF ablation were included in the study, in which 101 patients were treated with dabigatran, 72 patients were treated with rivaroxaban. The intraoperative ACT values were examined in both groups. The incidence of periprocedural complications was evaluated. RESULTS: Initial heparin dosage (88 ± 19 U/kg vs. 78 ± 27 U/kg, P < 0.05), total heparin dosage (137 ± 41 U/kg vs. 106 ± 52 U/kg, P < 0.05) during the ablation procedure were higher in the dabigatran group than those in the rivaroxaban group. Mean ACT (280 ± 36 s vs. 265 ± 30 s, P < 0.05), and the percentage of ACTs within the therapeutic range (250-350 s) (74% ± 26% vs. 60% ± 29%, P < 0.05) were significantly lower in the dabigatran group than those in the rivaroxaban group, particularly in male patients. Furthermore, the average time of achieving the target ACT (250-350 s) was also found longer in the dabigatran group (P < 0.05) as compared with the rivaroxaban group. No significant difference was found in the incidence of periprocedural complications between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: The anticoagulant effect of uninterrupted rivaroxaban therapy appears to be more stable and efficient than dabigatran administration during catheter ablation in patients with AF.

RESUMO

Background: Single-anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is one of the most effective bariatric procedures in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the mechanisms by which SADI-S improves T2DM are not well-known. Objective: To explore the effects of SADI-S on metabolites in the stool of rats with T2DM. Methods: Twenty rats were fed on high-fat diet and administered with a low-dose (30mg/kg) of streptozotocin to establish T2DM models. The rats were then randomly assigned to the SADI-S group (n=10) and sham operation group (n=9). Stool samples were collected from all rats at 8 weeks after surgery and stored at -80 °C. Metabolomics analysis was performed to identify differential metabolites through ultra- performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: At 8-week after surgery, rats of the SADI-S group showed significantly decreased fasting blood glucose, glucose tolerance test 2-hour, glycated haemoglobin, and body weight compared with those of the sham group. A total of 245 differential metabolites were identified between the two groups. Among them, 16 metabolites such as branched-chain amino acids (valine), aromatic amino acid (phenylalanine), bile acid (cholic acid, lithocholic acid, and ß-muricholic acid), short-chain fatty acid (isobutyric acid), and phospholipid [lysoPE(17:0), lysoPE(20:3) and lysoPS(16:0)] were associated to the T2DM remission after SADI-S. Conclusion: SADI-S improves T2DM in rats by regulating phenylalanine biosynthesis, valine, phenylalanine, alanine, glutamate, proline, bile acid, and phospholipid metabolism pathways.

RESUMO

Background: The robotic surgical system is being used in various bariatric procedures. However, only a few studies with very small sample size are present on robotic single-anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S). Moreover, to date, the learning curve of robotic SADI-S has been poorly evaluated yet. Objective: This retrospective study aimed to estimate the learning curve of robotic SADI-S. Methods: 102 consecutive patients who underwent robotic SADI-S between March 2020 and December 2021 were included. Textbook outcome standard was performed to comprehensively evaluate clinical outcome of robotic SADI-S. Based on the textbook outcome, we evaluated the learning curve of robotic SADI-S by the cumulative sum (CUSUM) method. Results: The mean operative time was 186.13 ± 36.91 min. No conversion to laparotomy or deaths occurred during the study period. The rate of complications was 6.9% (n = 7), of which major complications were identified in 2.9% (n = 3), including 2 gastric leakages and 1 respiratory failure. A total of 60 patients reached the textbook outcome standard. The rate of textbook outcome was positive and was steadily increasing after the number of surgical cases accumulated to the 58th case. Taking the 58th case as the boundary, all the patients were divided into the learning stage group (the first 58 patients) and mastery stage group (the last 44 patients). The rate of complications, proportion of abdominal drainage tubes and postoperative hospital stay were significantly higher in the learning stage group compared with the mastery stage group (P < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of patient demographic data, operative times, reoperations and readmission. Conclusion: Robotic SADI-S is a feasible and reproducible surgical technique with a learning curve of 58 cases.

RESUMO

Abnormal expression of miR-409-3p has been found in several neurodevelopmental disorders, but whether it is dysregulated in the patients with acute cerebral infarction (ACI) has not been evaluated. The current study mainly focused on the clinical significance and the underlying mechanism of plasma miR-409-3p in the progression of ACI. The level of plasma miR-409-3p was determined in ACI patients (n = 80) and healthy controls (n = 30). Pearson correlation assay was performed to evaluate the association and cardiovascular risk factors. A receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to evaluate the diagnostic value of plasma miR-409-3p levels in patients with ACI. Dual luciferase reporter assay and western blot were performed to determine the possible target gene of miR-409-3p. Our data showed that the expression of plasma miR-409-3p in the ACI group was higher than that in the healthy controls. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between plasma miR-409-3p and the NIHSS score. ROC analysis indicated that plasma miR-409-3p could differentiate plasma miR-409-3p in ACI patients from healthy controls. Then, we explored the possible target genes of miR-409-3p. Interestingly, C1q and TNF-related 3 (CTRP3), a novel adipose tissue-derived secreted factor, was found to be a target gene of miR-409-3p. We found that knockdown of CTRP3 significantly induced PC12 cell apoptosis, even in PC12 cells transfected with miR-409-3p inhibitor. These data suggested that miR-409-3p induced PC12 cell apoptosis by targeting CTRP3. Altogether, elevated plasma miR-409-3p is correlated with disease severity and may be efficient for the early diagnosis of ACI.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of neurointervention combined with intravenous thrombolysis in the treatment of ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICD) and its influence on the neurological function and prognosis of patients. A total of 119 patients with ICD admitted to Xinxiang Central Hospital (Xinxiang, China) from May 2013 to September 2015 were selected. Among them, 65 patients were enrolled in the control group and treated with intravenous thrombolysis, whereas the other 54 patients were enrolled in the observation group and were treated with intravenous thrombolysis combined with neurointervention. The National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) system was used to evaluate the neurological function of patients after treatment. Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis was carried out to assess the survival of patients. The total effective rate, complications, vascular recanalization and the hospitalization time after treatment were compared between the two groups. The NIHSS scores at 1, 3 and 6 months after treatment were statistically lower in the observation group than those in the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate and total vascular recanalization in the observation group were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). The incidence of complications in the observation group was statistically lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, neurointervention combined with intravenous thrombolysis can not only effectively improve the diseased blood vessels of patients and restore the damaged nerve function, but also reduce the incidence of complications. Moreover, neurointervention combined with intravenous thrombolysis is safe and can ensure a better quality of life of patients.

RESUMO

To our knowledge, little attention has been paid to the sexual function of health workers. The aim of the present study was to assess the frequency of sexual dysfunction among Chinese doctors. In addition, the risk factors for sexual dysfunction were analyzed. This was a questionnaire-based multicenter cross-sectional survey performed in five large academic medical centers in China. A total of 539 male doctors, 547 female doctors were evaluated. We analyzed doctors' demographic characteristics, quality of life, sexual function and attitudes towards sexual problems. Chinese doctors are at high risk of sexual dysfunction and poor health. The prevalence of sexual dysfunction appears to increase with age, and is associated with various social and demographic factors including monthly income, physical exercise, working hours, night shift and health-related quality. The quality of life and sexual health of doctors deserves special attention as a significant public health concern. Alleviating work pressure, increasing income, improving quality of life and therapeutic sexual problems should be considered comprehensively.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to evaluate the renoprotective effects of chelerythrine (CHE), a protein kinase C inhibitor, on neonatal rats after partial unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) surgery. New born Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to partial UUO 48 h after birth and received a daily intraperitoneal injection of 5 mg/kg CHE. At 21-day age, the rats were scarified and the kidneys were collected for analysis. Results showed that CHE treatment significantly increased kidney weight and restored renal function in the obstructed kidney. Histological examination demonstrated that CHE attenuated renal injury by reducing renal parenchymal loss and preventing glomerular and tubular degeneration. In addition, CHE inhibited partial UUO-induced upregulated kidney injury molecule-1 expression and apoptosis and renal fibrosis. Moreover, as a PKC inhibitor, CHE significantly inhibited PKCα and PKCß membrane translocation. This action may be associated with its effects of anti-apoptosis and anti-fibrosis and contribute to the renoprotection. This short-term study suggests that CHE is beneficial for obstructive nephropathy in neonatal rats and provides foundation for further studies to reveal the long-term effects of CHE on obstructive nephropathy in children and infants.

RESUMO

The current study mainly aims to evaluate the expression pattern and underlying mechanism of upstream stimulating factor 1 (USF1) in the muscle tissues of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients. In accordance with previous findings, our data showed that muscle strength was significantly decreased in KOA patients compared with controls. Furthermore, several inflammatory factors, including tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), IL-8, IL-6 and MCP-1, were associated with reduced muscle strength in KOA patients. Not surprisingly, NF-κB signaling was significantly activated in the muscle tissues of KOA patients compared with control individuals. Furthermore, we showed that USF1 was increased in the muscles of KOA patients compared with controls. More importantly, overexpression of USF1 in primary human skeletal muscle cells significantly increased the activation of NF-κB signaling as well as the levels of pro-inflammatory factors. In summary, we showed novel data that the upregulation of USF1 promoted NF-κB activation-induced inflammatory responses in muscle tissues of KOA patients.

RESUMO

Aims: Distinguishing between ventricular arrhythmias originating from the left ventricular infero-septal papillary muscles (PM) and those from the left posterior fascicle (LPF) by surface electrocardiography (ECG) is very difficult. This study aimed to report the ECG characteristics and radiofrequency catheter ablation of PM and LPF ventricular arrhythmias. Methods and results: A total of 127 patients underwent catheter ablation of idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias originating from the LPF (n = 106; 85 males; 10-70 years) or PM (n = 21; 14 males; 4-68 years) were studied. A three-dimensional electroanatomic system (3D-EAS) was used to aid ablation. PM ventricular arrhythmias had a longer QRS duration (154.4 ± 18.0 vs. 119.7 ± 12.6 ms, P < 0.001) than LPF ventricular arrhythmias. All 7 ventricular arrhythmias with QRS duration >160 ms originated from the PM, whereas all 87 ventricular arrhythmias with QRS duration <130 ms arose from the LPF. In 33 ventricular arrhythmias with QRS 130-160 ms, all 13 with Vi/Vt ≤ 0.85 originated from the PM, and 19 of 20 with Vi/Vt > 0.85 arose from the LPF. Of the 8 PM ventricular arrhythmias patients whose initial ablation was undertaken using a non-irrigated 4 mm-tip catheter, 1 failed and 6 recurred. However, of the remaining 13 ones using an irrigated catheter and the 3D-EAS, all succeeded and 2 recurred. No complications were noted in any patient. Conclusion: PM ventricular arrhythmias could be identified from LPF ventricular arrhythmias by calculation of QRS duration combined with Vi/Vt using ECG.

RESUMO

The digit ratio has been used as a retrospective noninvasive biomarker to investigate the putative effects of prenatal exposure to androgens. In recent years, many scholars have paid attention to the association between 2D:4D (the second and fourth digits) and prostatic cancer. This study explored the prognostic significance of digit ratio in prostate cancer patients. We reviewed the progressive status and survival of 382 prostate cancer patients who had received hormone therapy at our institutions. Survival of clinicopathological variables analyzed as categorical variables were determined by the log-rank test. According to Cox's proportional hazards analysis, R2D:4D, L2D:4D, PSA at 6 month, bone metastasis were significant independent factors for prostate cancer. The risk of any progression of prostate cancer similarly depressed with increasing 2D:4D, for any progression (R2D:4D HR = 0.71, p = 0.003; L2D:4D HR = 0.67, p = 0.001), for cancer-specific death (R2D:4D HR = 0.67, p = 0.025; L2D:4D HR = 0.74, p = 0.036). Digit ratio may not only have predictive value in risk but also prognosis of prostatic cancer. This finding suggests that low 2D:4D can be used as prognostic factors to identify patients with a poor prognosis. These patients may benefit from more aggressive management.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to review the ultrasonographic features of secondary intussusception (SI) in children and assess the value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of pediatric SI. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective analysis on the ultrasound findings of 1977 cases of primary intussusception (PI) and 37 cases of SI in children. The SI cases were diagnosed by ultrasonography and confirmed by laparotomy or histopathologic diagnosis. The clinical and ultrasonographic features were analyzed and compared between these two groups. RESULTS: The age, no flatus or defecation, position, diameter and length of intussusception, the presence of free intraperitoneal liquid, and intestinal dialation at the proximal end present, all contributed to the differentiation between PI and SI (all P < 0.05). Ultrasound was able to demonstrate the pathological lead point (PLP) shadows in all of the 37 SI cases, either in the cervical part or intussusceptum of the intussusception. Among the 37 SI patients, 21 cases (56.8 %) were accurately categorized with lesions, including intestinal polyps, cystic intestinal duplication, intestinal wall lymphoma, and a small part of Meckel's diverticulum. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound can be used as a feasible and effective method to discriminate PI from SI. Once the PLP is detected, a definite diagnosis can be made. KEY POINTS: • The clinical and ultrasonographic features were compared between SI and PI. • The age, location, diameter and length of intussusception, and intestinal dilation were distinguishing features. • The causes of SI were found to be polyps, intestinal duplication, lymphoma, and Meckel's diverticulum. • Ultrasound can be used as an important method to diagnose SI. • Demonstration and confirmation of PLP are vital to diagnosing SI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: At present, little information has been made available in the evaluation of renal volume in pediatric groups of different ages. PURPOSE: The purposes of the study are to evaluate the relationship between anthropometric measurements and renal volume measured with three-dimensional ultrasonography in Chinese children who have normal kidneys, and to attempt to develop reliable reference values of renal volume to estimate the renal sizes. METHODS: A total of 1572 Chinese Han children suffering from stomachache, cryptorchidism and neurogenic enuresis with no history of renal disease or pathological abnormalities that might affect measurements, aged 1month to 12years (mean, 5.64years) were examined bilateral kidneys by ultrasonography. The measurements of renal volume were determined using QLAB software in IU22 units (Philips Medical Systems, Holland). Anthropometric indices including sex, age, height and weight were collected for reviewed analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1683 children were included, and renal volume of 1572 cases (93.4%) was accepted. There was no significant difference between renal volumes of male and female separately in left and right kidneys (P=0.844 and P=0.621, respectively), whereas there was a significant difference between mean left and right renal volumes (P=0.000). Age, height and weight were all significant correlations with renal volume (R(2), 0.885 and 0.913 for the left and right kidneys, respectively, both P=0.000), and age was the strongest correlation with renal volume (r, 0.472 and 0.399 for the left and right kidneys, respectively) among the anthropometric indices. We drew regression equations to estimate renal volume as follows: left renal volume (cm(3))=0.441×age+0.156×height+0.398×weight+6.677 and right renal volume (cm(3))=0.256×age+0.195×height+0.632×weight+1.788, and developed reference values of renal volume separately for the left and right kidneys in different age groups. CONCLUSIONS: Regression equations have been developed, which define the renal volume from three-dimensional ultrasonography and may assist pediatricians in monitoring renal growth and detecting of unsuspected bilateral increases or decreases in renal size.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: At present, the diagnostic criteria of congenital cholangiectasis are still vague. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the diameter references of the common bile duct (CBD) in pediatric population in different age groups with ultrasound. METHODS: The diameter of the common bile duct was measured with ultrasound in 343 Chinese Han children aged 1 day to 14 years (mean: 3.2 years, median: 2.8 years) who were all free of hepatic and biliary tract disease. The ultrasound records, gender, and age were collected for reviewed analysis. RESULTS: A total of 343 children were included, and the CBD was clearly detected in 322 cases (93.9%). The mean diameter of this population was 1.58 ± 0.70 mm. (ranging from 0.4 to 4.4mm). Spearman correlation analysis showed that the diameter of CBD was positively associated with age (r=0.573, P<0.001). The percentile method demonstrated that the diameter references of CBD was as follows: ≤ 1 years: ≤ 2.26 mm; ≤ 4 years: ≤ 2.99 mm; ≤ 7 years: ≤ 3.03 mm; and ≤ 14 years: ≤ 4.10mm. CONCLUSIONS: There was a close correlation between CBD width and the age. The range of CBD widths in each age group will be helpful in the diagnosis of biliary dilatation in childhood.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical value of high-resolution ultrasonography (US) in the diagnosis of neonatal congenital esophageal atresia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Longitudinal or oblique mediastinal and abdominal scans were performed using a high-frequency, linear array Philip IU22 probe of 5-13MHz to measure the length and diameter of the upper and lower esophageal pouches, as well as the gap length. RESULTS: Three neonates with esophageal atresia received surgical treatment. For each case, the length and diameter of the blind upper and/or lower esophageal pouches were measured by ultrasonography. The gaps in two of three cases were long (>3cm), and in one case, it was short (<2cm). CONCLUSIONS: High-resolution ultrasonography can demonstrate clearly the upper and lower pouches, as well as wall features, and has a clear advantage in measuring the length of the lower esophageal pouch and the gap, which is impossible with plain radiography and esophagography. The drawback is that ultrasonography failed to clearly demonstrate the fistula between the esophagus and the trachea. Despite this, high-resolution ultrasonography is a promising modality in the clinical diagnosis of esophageal atresia.

RESUMO

We have investigated the expression and role of the 58-kDa micro-spherule protein (MSP58) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Immunohistochemistry was performed in 252 samples from patients with HCC to detect the expression level of MSP58. Results indicated that the expression level of MSP58 in the cancer samples was significantly higher than that in adjacent normal tissues. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test showed significant difference in the expression of MSP58 in patients with serum AFP, tumor size, histological differentiation, and universal integrated circuit card (UICC) stage (P < 0.001, P = 0.004, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). A total of 252 HCC patients were followed up for five consecutive years, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis demonstrated that the survival time of HCC patients with low expression of MSP58 was longer than those with high expression during the 5-year follow-up period (P < 0.001). Cox regression analysis indicated that high expression of MSP58 (++ or +++), serum AFP (≥25 µg/L), tumor size (≥3 cm), and UICC stage (III or IV) were the independent poor prognostic factors of HCC (P = 0.008, 0.0290, 0.001, 0.047, respectively). Furthermore, down-regulation of MSP58 was introduced to HCC cell lines (HepG2 and Huh7) by plasmid transfection. In vivo and in vitro studies indicated that MSP58si markedly reduced proliferation and promoted the apoptosis of HepG2 and Huh7 cells. In summary, our results demonstrated that MSP58 played an important role in the proliferation and apoptosis of HCC cells and the expression of MSP58 in HCC patients was closely related to the prognosis.
